Muziekrechten

What are royalties?

Short answer

Royalties are payments that creators and rights holders receive when their music is used, for example on radio, TV, streaming services or in stores.

Royalties are payments that creators and rights holders receive when their music is used. Think of broadcasts on radio and TV, streams or music played in stores. In the Netherlands, Buma/Stemra (for composers, lyricists and publishers) and Sena (for artists and record labels) collect these payments and distribute them among their members. For broadcasts, the station or platform usually pays, separately from the license you take out as an advertiser. Read What music is truly worth.
