Muziekrechten

What is copyright-free music?

Short answer

People usually mean royalty-free music: you pay once for a license. Only music whose copyright has expired is truly free of rights.

'Copyright-free music' is a confusing term. People usually mean royalty-free music: you pay once for a license and do not have to pay per use afterward. The rights still exist, though. Only music whose copyright has expired is truly free of rights; in the Netherlands, that is seventy years after the composer's death. Even then, the recording may still be protected. So always read the license terms. Read more about music rights and licensing.
