What is the difference between voice cloning and text-to-speech?

Short answer

Text-to-speech reads text aloud with a standard voice. Voice cloning replicates a specific, existing voice so it can speak new texts.

Text-to-speech (TTS) converts text into speech using a standard voice from a library. Voice cloning goes a step further: the model learns to replicate a specific, existing voice, so that voice can speak new texts. TTS is generic and ready to use. A cloned voice is unique to you or your brand, but requires consent, recordings and careful agreements. We use both techniques at TFA, always with human review of the result.
