What an audio post-production house actually does

TFA is an audio studio in Amsterdam that helps brands, agencies, and producers with audio post-production and sonic branding.
TFA provides sound design, ADR, Foley, and Dolby Atmos mixes, as well as voice-over casting and recording with both voice actors and AI voices, music production via the TRX Music Library, and the associated music rights and licensing. We thought it would be useful to explain what an audio post-production house does and how TFA puts each of these elements into practice.
A film is finished as soon as the camera stops. That’s what most people think. In reality, that is when a different craft begins. The footage is there, but the sound is not. What you will hear later still needs to be created.
That is the domain of an audio post-production house. It is not just a place where sound is recorded, but where sound is perfected. Where dialogue is polished, atmosphere is created, music is placed perfectly, and every second of footage is given a sound that makes it believable. At TFA, it all comes together under the banner of audio post-production and sonic branding, from sound design and ADR to Foley and the final mix.
The recording is never the end point
Anyone visiting a set for the first time might expect the sound from that day to be good enough. In practice, recorded audio is a raw starting point. Background traffic, a creaky floor, a line that wasn't delivered quite right—all of this needs to be corrected before a scene becomes convincing.
That is why ADR exists: re-recording dialogue after filming has wrapped. One of our team members worked on this right after her studies and was one day asked to step in for a scene from Gemini Man, in which a younger version of the main character is choking after a gunshot wound. A higher-pitched voice was needed. She was given a glass of milk to mimic the sound of blood in the throat and spent the session making choking sounds into a microphone. Strange, certainly. But that exact type of work determines whether a scene resonates or not.
The same applies to the voice itself. Through voice-over casting and recording , we don't just look for the first suitable voice, but the voice that perfectly matches the story, the brand values, and the target audience. From Dutch voice-overs to multilingual productions for international campaigns: every choice is made with the same discerning ear. An example of our work is Lidl, for whom we produce the complete audio.
Where technology and emotion meet: AI voices at TFA
In addition to voice actors, we now also work with AI voices, a development that is changing the profession without compromising its character. Instant voices, prompted voices, remixed voices, and fully personalized AI voices offer a solution when a project requires speed, multiple versions, or a more efficient budget, for example in large-scale or international campaigns where buy-outs and talent fees would otherwise quickly add up.
But a generated voice is never the end point for us. Technology provides a foundation, not the final result. An AI voice still lacks the small irregularities that make a human believable: a breath at the right moment, a slight hesitation, the nuance between joy and relief. That is why we fully tailor every AI voice to the project and, where necessary, our team puts the finishing touches on what a model produces. The technology accelerates the process. The craftsmanship determines if it’s right. Meet our AI voices Sophie, Stijn, Bram, Alex, and others.
Sound that was never there
Beyond dialogue, it’s about everything you don’t see, but definitely feel. Ambient sounds that bring a space to life. A door closing in the distance. A radio playing softly in another room. None of that was on set. Everything is added later, layer by layer, until an image breathes instead of standing still.
Some sounds come from a library. A door, birds, traffic: those are usually easy to find. But the more specifically a sound needs to match what’s happening on screen, the more often it’s recorded from scratch. Footsteps that are perfectly in sync. An apple being bitten. A beer bottle clicking open at exactly the right moment. That kind of in-sync audio requires patience and a sharp ear, not a quick grab from an archive.
For larger productions, this goes beyond stereo. From our specially equipped Dolby Atmos studio, featuring a professional 7.1.4 monitoring setup, we create immersive mixes for films, commercials, podcasts, streaming platforms, branded content, and music. Sound is then literally placed around the listener instead of just being directed at them. A great example of one of our Dolby Atmos productions is Spatial Stories. A podcast series that utilizes the full potential of Dolby Atmos.
Music as a brand asset
Where sound design supports the image, music gives direction to emotion. When deadlines are tight but quality remains essential, the TRX Music Library and music production offers direct access to pre-cleared tracks from composers, ready for commercials, branded films, podcasts, and online video. If stock music doesn't suffice, our team develops full custom music productions, from a recognizable jingle to a complete radio commercial.
This also includes everything that needs to be handled behind the scenes. Through music rights and licensing we ensure that clearing tracks, negotiating sync rights, and managing royalties is legally sound and hassle-free, so the focus can remain on the creation itself.
The work you shouldn't notice
The greatest compliment for an audio post-production house is silence. No questions, no doubts, no moment where the viewer wonders why something doesn't feel right. Just a story that feels natural, whether that story is told with a voice-over, a custom sound effect, a composition from our catalog, or an AI voice refined by a human.
That sense of naturalness is the result of hours of work that no one sees. Of choices about what should and shouldn't be audible. Of professionals who know that sound doesn't just support what you see, but also determines what you feel.
At TFA, that is exactly where we come from. Not as an afterthought, but as part of the story from the very first moment, with all the necessary services under one roof.
