What is Foley?

Foley is the reenactment and recording of everyday sounds in sync with the picture: footsteps, rustling clothes, a cup being set on a table.

Foley is the reenactment and recording of everyday sounds in sync with the picture: footsteps, rustling clothes, a cup being set down on a table. A Foley artist does this in the studio using all kinds of materials. This gives a scene body and makes it believable. The name comes from Jack Foley, who developed the technique at Universal in the late 1920s. For Bad Slippers, we handled all the Foley. Read more about audio post-production.
